The telephone operator will ask you which emergency service you need, ie. Ambulance, Police or Fire department, and your telephone number. You will then be connected to the emergency service that you require. The patient will be taken to an Emergency & Accident department of a hospital.
Accident and Emergency departments of hospitals will see and treat anyone who urgently needs medical attention; treatment is free for all visitors (however, visitors who are admitted to hospital as an in-patient or referred to an out-patient clinic are liable to be charged if they are not entitled to free National Health Service Hospital Treatment as detailed in the following paragraph).
FREE NHS HOSPITAL TREATMENT.
European Community nationals (and nationals and/or residents of countries were reciprocal arrangements exist, see lists below) are entitled to free National Health Service hospital medical treatment (medication is not free however). To claim free treatment you must have a completed form E111, but a passport confirming your nationality or residence might be accepted.
EC Member Countries:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, The Irish Republic, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden. Also permitted are nationals of Iceland and Norway.
Reciprocal arrangement countries:
Nationals of:-
Bulgaria, Czech and Slovak Republics, Gibraltar, Hungary, Malta, New Zealand, Russia, former Soviet Union states (except Latvia, Luthuania and Estonia), Yugoslavia.
Residents of:-
Anguilla, Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Channel Islands, Falkland Islands, Hong Kong, Iceland, Isle of Man, Montserrat, Poland, Romania, St. Helena, Turks and Caicos Islands.
